The Dunbrody Famine Ship Experience offers a powerful and moving journey into one of the most significant chapters of Irish history — the mass emigration during the Great Famine in the mid-1800s. When you visit, you start at the original William Graves ticket office, where emigrants once bought their passage to a new life abroad. From there, you board a carefully reconstructed famine-era emigrant ship, often called a “coffin ship” due to the perilous and cramped conditions passengers endured on the Atlantic crossing.

The tour is brought to life by costumed guides who portray real emigrants, sharing their personal stories and hardships. As you walk through the ship, you get a vivid sense of the cramped quarters, poor sanitation, and struggles faced during the voyage. After disembarking, the experience continues with exhibits detailing life in Ireland before and after emigration, as well as the impact Irish emigrants had in their new homes, especially in America.
